About Speakeasy Apothecary
Some people discover fragrance. Others are simply born knowing.
As early as seventh grade, the founder of Speakeasy Apothecary was cataloguing the notes of her favorite perfumes in a Word document — attempting to distill, even then, what it was about a particular scent that made it feel like something. In high school she became known for wearing men's fragrance at an all-girls school, not out of rebellion but out of a simple, unwavering conviction: it smelled right, and that was enough.
That instinct — that fragrance is less about convention and more about feeling — has never left.
The Origin
Speakeasy Apothecary began, as many things do, with an absence. During the early days of COVID, a favorite candle ran out and the usual solution — simply going to buy another — wasn't available. What followed was a question: could I make it myself?
The answer, it turned out, was yes. And then some.
What began as a simple attempt at duplication became a three-year deep dive into the art and science of candle making and fragrance blending — wax compositions, vessel sizing, fragrance loads, wick selection, and the painstaking development of original scent blends. Nothing was rushed. Nothing was sold until it was right. Every detail was tested, refined, and tested again.
Three years. Then Speakeasy Apothecary opened its doors.
The Craft
Every fragrance in the Speakeasy Apothecary collection is an original composition — a blend of two to six fragrance oils developed over time and extensive testing. Nothing here can be bought elsewhere as is. Each scent is built from the inside out, composed around a mood, a room, a feeling — and refined until it does exactly what it's meant to do.
All products are hand-poured in small batches in Ohio, using a clean-burning blend of coconut and soy wax. The process is slow and deliberate because the result demands nothing less.
The Philosophy
The founder is a clinical mental health therapist by profession — which means the relationship between mood and fragrance isn't just a brand philosophy. It's something understood from both sides of the experience.
Fragrance shapes atmosphere. Atmosphere shapes how a moment is experienced. This isn't incidental — it's the entire point. Every fragrance in this collection was composed with that belief at its center, built to transform an ordinary room into something more intentional. A place of retreat. A moment of presence. A slower way of being in the world.
The founder still lights a candle every single night after work. It changes nearly every day — because the mood changes, the room changes, the moment calls for something different. That instinct, refined over a lifetime, is what Speakeasy Apothecary is built on.
Fragrance, after hours.
